August 3, 2007fire.![]() click the love ![]() click Killed in the fire were Michell Mattison, 19, Derik Faubion, 19, the couple's 2-month-old daughter Hayden Allison Faubion, Mattison's 2-year-old step brother Ariel Nel Bisnar and her 4-year-old step sister Lexus May Bisnar. The young couple, who had been living in the apartment for less than a month, was babysitting Mattison's siblings for the night. It the largest fire related fatality in the history of Lemoore according to Lemoore Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Ted Schlosser. "I have lived here for 40 years and this is a dark day in Lemoore," said Lemoore Mayor John Murray the day of the blaze. "Our hearts go out for those who have lost children." At approximately 1:20 a.m. fire crews were dispatched to Northgate Apartments on Hazelwood Avenue near Meadow Lane Elementary school. LVFD was the first engine on scene, responding eight-minutes after the initial 911 call. "The roof was fully involved and so was four apartments," Schlosser said of the fire when crews first arrived. Riza Mattison, mother of Michell, Ariel and Lexus arrived at the scene as fire crews were working to put out the blaze, along with Arnel Bisnar, father of Ariel and Lexus. She said she alerted crews that she had family still in the building, but it was too unstable for fire crews to move in. The bodies of the victims were discovered just after 4 a.m. Jonathan Jamison, who lived with Michell Mattison and Faubion before they moved in to the Northgate Apartment, said that he was visiting the couple only hours before the fire. "I was there at about 11 o'clock," Jamison said. "Just hanging out. Derik got off work at 10:30 p.m. so I went over there." Gloria Kloss, who has resided at the apartments for 17 years, lived in the upstairs apartment neighboring Mattison's and Faubion's. She was awakened by a loud noise and the glow of the fire from her back window. She said the heat from the fire was melting her window blinds as she made her way out of the apartment, leaving her medication and glasses behind. "I was laying in bed and seen this orange glow and I heard things pop," Kloss said. "I thought someone was doing fireworks." As she vacated her apartment, she noticed people trying to enter the couple's apartment next-door. "People were pounding on the door trying to kick the door in," said Kloss, "but you can't kick it in because it's a metal door." Kloss was later transported to Kaweah Delta Hospital, where she was treated for smoke inhalation. The blaze caused an estimated $1 million in damages to the 24-unit apartment complex according to Schlosser. Nine units were damaged in the two buildings that make up the apartment complex. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is unknown where the blaze originated. Michell Mattison and Faubion had been dating since their freshman year at Lemoore High. Fellow classmate Whitney McPherson, who graduated with the two, was placing a memento at the make-shift memorial in front of the burned out complex on Tuesday afternoon. She said she had stayed in close contact with them since. "I met Derik actually freshman year," she said. "I sat next to him and he would always get me in trouble." McPherson said she had just seen Michell Mattison days before the fire, and Faubion about a week prior at his work, Best Buy Grocery Store. Michell Mattison worked at Ramblin Rose and had recently delivered flowers to McPherson. Many people have added to the growing memorial in front of the devastated apartment building. Vigils have been held well into the early morning, some lasting until 5:30 a.m. Community support is pouring in and monetary donations are being collected to aid the family of the victims and the displaced families. See the city of Lemoore statement on page one in this edition of The Advance to find out how to help. The Lemoore Lions Club donated $900 and the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino has given $10,000 to help the family with funeral expenses, which are estimated at about $20,000. Lemoore Christian Aid, The American Red Cross and The Salvation army are all accepting donations of clothing, bedding and similar items. The Lemoore Rotary Club took up a donation from members at it's luncheon on Tuesday and plans to give another $500 to help the families. The American Red Cross set up a relief center at the Civic Center in downtown Lemoore. Seventeen people had registered with the Red Cross by Saturday afternoon, according to Pat O'Brien, chairman of disaster services with the Red Cross. Schlosser said he couldn't recall the last time a life was lost in a fire, and didn't believe that there had ever been multiple lives lost due to a fire in Lemoore. "Whatever the cause, five young people lost their lives," said Schlosser the morning of the fire. "I have lived here all my life, 50-something years, and this is the first time I've seen a fire with the loss of life we saw last night." ![]() REPOST
